I had never been through anything like this before. The idea of losing someone close to me was something I’d never even considered. But now, I’m living through it. I realize that life is fragile. Life is painfully fragile.

Over the past year, my group of friends has changed. People have moved away, started families, and drifted apart. But he was still here. He was one of my last “true” friends in the area. But he’s gone. I vividly remember the night it happened. It all felt like a surreal scene from a movie.

I tried to help his family and take care of everything that needs to be done, but it felt like there was this knot in my stomach that wouldn’t go away. People kept telling me they were here for me, but it felt like there was nothing anyone can do. We had plans to go on a trip in March that year. We were talking about exciting activities with the friend group. I just met him a few days before the accident, and suddenly…everything felt off. Nothing looked the same.

Sometimes it still feels like a cruel joke of fate. I thought how unfair it was that life could be cut short so early, but I had to face the reality that he’s not here. He’s never coming back. It was like he ceased to exist. The life that was so vibrant yesterday had now been completely broken. And not just his life, but every single life that has ever existed, is existing, and will ever exist in this world face the same fragility.

I was never the same after the loss. I was a changed man. But, for the better, I guessed. I thought of how all of us could just one day suddenly disappear from this world, leaving everyone and everything we love behind. I had grown to be grateful for what we had together, and I truly appreciated that he was with me in a good part of my life. His passing taught me to cherish every moment, to hold onto the people that we love, and to live each day to the fullest. That was the biggest gift from him, and I will forever treasure it in my heart.

It was hard to accept that life is fragile and unpredictable, and that we are not in control of everything that happens to us.
